He is one of the most long-serving players on Liverpool books and today central defender Martin Škrtel turns 30. Congrats!
The Slovak signed for the Reds in January 2008 and is now playing in his 8th season at Anfield. He has clocked up just over 200 league games and scored 14 goals in the Premier League. For most of the time Škrtel has held down a regular spot in the team. In 2012 Liverpool supporters voted him player of the year. But his form has been up and down during his Anfield career.
Škrtel has all the attributes to be a top defender. He looks pretty scary and is brave and uncompromising. The Slovak is tough in the tackle, useful in the air and has decent ball skills. His positional play is sometimes questionable and too often he gets nervous or too eager and therefore makes silly mistakes.
Martin Škrtel should by now be the leader in the Liverpool defence, organizing, steering and be the vocal guy. But on this count he bails out. So it´s about time for Liverpool´s number 37 to take charge of his defensive troops and be the reliable Red rock in his final five or six years in football.
