He has been with Liverpool since 2007 and is currently playing in his 8th season with the club. Today he turns 28. Congrats Lucas Leiva!
He signed from Brazil club Gremio and was then known as a box-to-box-midfielder. In Liverpool it soon became evident that he was better suited as a defensive midfielder. But he didn´t impress even in that role and the fans often turned against him. His performances was indifferent to put it mildly. The young Brazilian had a hard time but knuckled down and never gave up.
And his perseverance paid off. Slowly but surely he took to Premier League life and became a regular in Liverpool. In 2010/11 he was voted player of the year by Liverpool supporters. That season Lucas was one of the best defensive midfielders in the league.
The following campaign bad luck struck. In November 2011 Lucas got a serious injury and was sidelined for seven months. When returning a new injury soon occured and it kept him out for another four months. Since then Lucas has not been able to produce the same form as in 2010/11, far from it. He is no longer a regular and there has been speculation about a move to Inter Milan.
Whatever happens with Lucas´ career let´s hope he can regain his best form wherever he plays in the future. With or without him:
We Go Again.
